This course on taxation, aims to introduce or refresh tax principles applicable to small or medium sized businesses. Focusing on relevant and up-to-date tax information, knowledge and skills acquired will be demonstrated through readings, practical exercises and case studies.

This course has been designed by one of the leading Business Tax Trainers in New Zealand. Daniel Hunt is a chartered accountant, business mentor and advisor and has dedicated his professional efforts to the field of business, taxation and education.

Graduating from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in 2005 with a Bachelor of Business including Post Graduate Diploma in Business, he joined the ranks of the world’s largest accounting firm, Pricewaterhouse Coopers.  This is where his fascination with the subject of business and
accounting flourished.  Daniel’s interests with education grew, keenly involving himself with Auckland University of Technology, as a vocal activist in the field of business, accounting and taxation.


Lesson Structure


There are five lessons, each requiring about 6-12 hours work by the student.

  4. Depreciation, Provisional Tax & Penalties
  5. Fringe Benefit Tax

Aims


  • To provide students with an understanding of the nature and scope of New Zealand taxation and the compliance requirements relating to income tax, goods and services tax, and fringe benefit tax.
  • To provide an overview of the history of Taxation in New Zealand and determine Liability to Income Tax.
  • Provide students with a general understanding of New Zealand’s Goods & Services Tax
  • To understand what receipts are liable for income tax.
  • Understand the depreciation methods available to taxpayers and calculate depreciation in fixed assets.
  • Understand the various tax penalties applicable to taxpayers


Activities


This in-depth course will provide students with the skills to:
  • Determine the compliance requirements relating to Income Tax, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT)
  • Understand how Income Tax, GST and FBT works and its application to business
  • Calculate taxation liabilities of companies relating to income tax:
    • Annual gross income (including income under ordinary concepts)
    • Exempt income
    • Allowable and non-allowable deductions
    • Net income
    • Income tax liability on taxable income
    • Satisfaction of income tax liability
    • Returns, penalties and use of money interest
  • Apply tax planning principles to common business situations:
    • Identify existing trading structures, their strengths, weaknesses, potentials and restrictions
    • Examine the taxation implications involved with each structure
    • Determine and critique optimal solutions, by evaluation tax planning opportunities for various business transactions.
  • Explore other contemporary tax issues both within New Zealand.
